For over 100 years, Zion Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) has faithfully served SLO out of their commitment to historic, protestant, reformation theology.

The Challenge
Zion Lutheran Church has served the community of San Luis Obispo, California since 1908, and has been at their present location—a prime corner at a major intersection just outside of downtown SLO—since 1952. As a Missouri Synod congregation, Zion is committed to historic, protestant, reformation theology.
When we initially began the project, what became apparent fairly early on was that they simply did not have a communications framework that could effectively convey their commitments while simultaneously connect with the large college population of nearby Cal Poly.
The Solution
The objective for the new Zion LCMS brand was three-fold:
1) Create a fresh, clean, modern-yet-timeless identity, the centerpiece of which is a logo mark consisting of a stylized woman’s face (cf. the ‘daughter of Zion,’ from Zechariah 9:9) and Zion’s church building as a crown.
2) Convey Zion’s theological priorities, namely, their reformed, Lutheran theology.
3) Champion Zion’s passion for the community of San Luis Obispo, which it has faithfully served for over well over 100 years.
The result is a brand that not only attempts to speak to the young population which comprises much of this trendy, West Coast college town, but that also communicates Zion’s commitment to historic, biblical Christianity.
